Global Organizations in ActionIn my initial stages of research I wanted to see what organizations where already out there and what they were saying about Global Citizenship and their methods. This part of the inquiry is definitely not conclusive as I only researched two organizations that I have heard nothing but good things about and have had some limited exposure too in my own educational experience. These organizations offer unique perspectives as they are "on the ground" so to speak when it comes to "doing" Global Citizenship Education and Service Learning Projects.
So why do they say it's important? |
Oxfam states that Global citizenship is not an additional subject, but rather, it is an ethos. It is best implemented through a whole-school approach, involving everyone from learners themselves to the wider community. It can also be promoted in class through teaching the existing curriculum in a way that highlights aspects such as social justice, the appreciation of diversity and the importance of sustainable development. They also suggest a three prong approach:
I.D.E.A.S. agrees by stating with the interconnected and interdependent nature of our world, the global is not ‘out there’; it is part of our everyday lives, as we are linked to others on every continent:
The active, participatory methods of Education for Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development help young people to learn how decisions made by people in other parts of the world affect our lives, just as our decisions affect the lives of others. Education for Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development also promotes pupil participation in the learning process and in decision-making for the following reasons:
